“We wanted to make the definitive crime comic about Encounter Cops – blending fact and fiction” Saurav Mohapatra reveals the true story of Mumbai Confidential
How big a comic scene is there in India? And how do you think Mumbai Confidential fits into it?
SM: Indian comic book scene is kind of hard to explain. It’s splintered into superheroes/mythological comics, intellectual literary comics, and the rest. There’s a lot of enthusiasm and fervor from the fandom, but the content is only now starting to get some variety. We hope Mumbai Confidential will contribute to that diversity and open up the genre of crime comics for future creators.
The growth of digital has really helped give the comic business a great multi-national feel as it is allowing people from all over the world to self publish. As writer/artists what do you think of this and what do you think the pros and cons of digital comics are? Has it helped you? And do you yourself use and read comics on a tablet?
SM: I think in the near future digital will be the default medium and print will be a vanity add-on. I also think we shouldn’t just take comics designed to be read on a printed page and slap them in an iphone app to read. I’m really interested in Motion Comics and the so-called “hyper-comics” to experiment and leverage all that the digital platform offers. I think companies like Madefire are going to break this space open soon.
Finally what can we expect to see next from the world of Mumbai Confidential? Another full story arc or some one shots?
SM: Vivek and I are deciding on the next volume. MC vol 1 took nearly 3-4 years to finish and it’s creator owned. So there was no pay up front for it. We definitely wish to revisit this universe a la Criminal or Sin City, but to make that happen – please do buy the book and recommend it to your friends 🙂
