“We tried to make ourselves creatively happy first and foremost, and not worry about what would actually sell a comic book” Sabertooth Swordsman creators Aaron Conley and Damon Gentry on the secrets of their success
The book is being released digitally first, what are your thoughts on the digital comics revolution and how do you think it benefits you as writers and artists?
AC: I think it’s fine, I think we still live in an era, luckily, that if people really dig a book digitally they will still go out and purchase the physical copy, so any way to get people reading and buying more and different kinds of comics is cool with me!
DG: In our case I’m hoping that the enticing 99 cent price tag on our digital releases coming out in advance of the hardcover will help build some word of mouth, and people that enjoy the print format will support us when that comes out. The digital releases will have exclusive color covers, and the hardcover will have exclusive pin-ups and some extras and be real pretty.
Are you iPad users yourself and if so what do you make of reading comics on a tablet? And what books get you excited?
AC: I don’t know if I’ve ever even held an I-pad, I’m a starving artist remember, maybe if we get enough sales on SS I can find out what reading comics is like on one, haha! Comics I’m excited about right now are Jim Woodring’s Fran, Uno Morales’ Frontier, Nobrow 8, It Will All Hurt by Farel Dalrymple, and Hellboy Midnight Circus.
DG: Yeah, from what I understand those IP-ads cost money or you have to steal one, so I do not have. It’s not a comic but I am reading Marvel: The Untold Story at this moment and I’m excited I never worked at Marvel.
Sabertooth Swordsman is scheduled for a 6 issue run, what can we expect from you next and any plans to do more with the characters beyond this first run?
AC: Yes! We are currently working on an 8 page Sabertooth short for the September issue of Dark Horse Presents, also I did the cover to Brandon Graham’s amazing reboot of Prophet, issue #36, out soon!.
DG: We’ve got some potential stuff in the works but it’s too early to announce anything.
Finally if you could pick any other sword fighting animal based characters to appear in your book who would you choose and why?
AC: I mean Usagi Yojimbo would seem like the most likely candidate, but I wouldn’t say no to a guest appearance by Leonardo or Cerebus either!
DG: I would go with Frog from Chrono Trigger.
Sabertooth Swordsman is available now from Dark Horse Digital for just £0.69/$0.99
