Growing on it’s success from 2017, Coventry Comic Con has had a makeover for the new year and moving forward will be officially known as Covcon, after a public vote. Our roving reporter Olly MacNamee is part of Covcon’s inner circle and so gives us the lowdown on what’s happening in the world of comics in Coventry this September.

With its mix of TV, film and media favourites, from shows like The Walking Dead, Doctor Who and Game of Thrones as well as a growing number of comic book creators, it was felt that the change in name better served the show we are putting on, for a second triumphant year this year.

This year we are making a concerted effort to develop and grow the Comics’ Zone to include more comic book creators than ever before – writers, artists and even editors – than the first year and forge links between the creators and the other guests too, in a way that compliments both. 

Who knows where this will lead by the time Coventry becomes the City of Culture in 2021. It’s certainly a good time to be part of a growing Coventry based cultural movement.

Already announced is BAFTA Awards nominee, Mike Carey (The Girl With All The Gifts, X-Men) and Anno Dracula artist, Paul McCaffrey, as well as local artist and Doctor Who artist, Simon Myers, the brains behind the new look logo. And, we’re only just getting started.

Aiming to be a family friendly show, a small scale London Film and Comic Con if you like, there will be the usual opportunity for photoshoots and comic book signings too.  And a good deal of cosplay too, with guests from the cosplay community already announced. All adding up to a fun, family day out with plenty to see and do. And, don’t forget the panels throughout the day that will inform fans on all things comic book, TV and film related. And then some. 

This year’s event will be taking place on Saturday 15th September again at the Sports Connexion complex, and only minutes from both Coventry and Leamington Spa via public transport. And, as with last years’ event, we will be providing a shuttle bus to and from Coventry Railway Station for easier access should you wish to leave your car at home. But, fear not, as there is plenty of FREE parking too.
