“They believed that trusting us do our thing would result in a better end product” Plants vs. Zombies comic artist Ron Chan and writer Paul Tobin from Dark Horse Comics
Did you check out other game based comics (like Pocket Gods) for inspiration?
RC: Unfortunately, I don’t know much about Pocket Gods, but I heard it was fun game, so perhaps I should check it out.
PT: As far as looking at other game-based comics, I didn’t do any of that. Plants vs. Zombies is such an individual game that it really didn’t matter what other people were doing with game-based comics. I simply concentrated on having our comic closely match the tone / style of the game, but in an open world with more plot and characterization.
Will we see any new characters in Lawnmageddon? And if so will they be fed back into the game?
PT: The story centers around two new characters, two young kids, Nate Timely and Patrice Blazing, Crazy Dave’s niece. I don’t think there are any current plans to work them into the upcoming games, but it would be interesting to see them there down the line.
RC: The main characters will be two young teens named Nate and Patrice. These two are brand new characters we’ve created for this story to team up with Crazy Dave and the plants. As far as the actual plants and zombies, I stuck with the Ps and Zs from the first game. While the comic is coming out around the same time as PvZ2, it’s not a direct tie-in, so I thought it would be better to stick with our familiar friends from the first game.
Were there any particular challenges fleshing out the characters?
PT: The only real character challenge was determining just how, in comic book terms, Crazy Dave would talk. We went back and forth on it, since he often (in the game) just spouts unintelligible gibberish… but how does that work in comic book terms when he has to convey information and interact with other characters? I finally decided that he would have an interpreter of sorts, his niece Patrice Blazing, who is so accustomed to his strange language that she can understand what he says. So, sometimes we can understand Dave ourselves, and sometimes… we need Patrice.
Finally, which is your favourite plant and favourite zombie and why?
PT: Hmm. I think my favourite plant in the game is definitely the cat-tail. So versatile! But they barely made it into the comic at all. Comic-wise, my favourite plant was the squash. It’s fun to write grumpy characters. And then for favourite zombie in the game, I’ll go with the balloon zombies, because it’s fun to pop their balloons and send them plummeting to their doom. In fact, I’ll say that they were my favourites in the comic, too… because I love how Ron depicted them.
RC: My favorite plant in the game is probably the Starfruit. I loved planting long rows of them to scatter-shot all passing zombies as they were herded in by frontline Garlic. Traffic Cone Zombie is my favorite zombie. Just gotta go with the classic there.
