Kyle Lambert/Bryan Hitch Twitter spat over Morgan Freeman iPad Painting – plus is it a fake?
Over Christmas you might have seen the incredible video of a Morgan Freeman iPad painting from digital artist Kyle Lambert. Well not everyone has been as big a fan of it as we were, and our interview with Kyle has been used as a part of the back and forth. We run down the Twitter spat.
It all started with the posting of a new Kyle Lambert digital painting on YouTube, this time of Hollywood icon Morgan Freeman, produced in the fantastic iPad painting app ProCreate. You can watch the video of it being produced below
Lambert’s video went viral receiving millions of views which brought it to the attention of UK magazine MacUser, who brought up the valid point of copyright and accreditation as Lambert had used a photo by New York based celebrity photographer Scott Gries as the source for his image.
@kylelambert Kyle, we love your work but can we just press you on the lack of credit for Scott Gries, who took the original photo?

Kyle gracefully acknowledged this and made amends.
@macusermagazine I just updated my page info and the YouTube description with Scott’s info. Thanks again. — Kyle Lambert (@kylelambert) December 3, 2013
However with Lambert’s work gaining worldwide attention it brought into question some of his other work, in particular an image of the Hulk by Ultimates artist Bryan Hitch which Lambert had posted on his site in 2011. You can see the piece in question below as part of Lambert’s promo video.
Despite having been online for 3 years, this work was finally brought to the attention of Hitch by Leo Laporte, host of podcast iPad Today…
I’d like to point out, @leolaporte the Kyle Lambert drawing of the Hulk you featured was actually my work from 2002. Published by Marvel. — BRYAN HITCH (@THEBRYANHITCH) December 13, 2013
And Hitch wasn’t overly impressed, focussing on the fact Lambert was copying his work rather than the accomplishment of Lambert producing the work on an iPad.
Whatever Kyle is doing on that particular image @leolaporte is either a trace or a copy of my own original work. — BRYAN HITCH (@THEBRYANHITCH) December 13, 2013
He even linked back to the original artwork from classic series The Ultimates
here’s the original from Marvel’s 2002 comic The Ultimates issue 5, @leolaporte drawn by me. pic.twitter.com/BSB5PYUEyA

Then, just when the whole thing looks like it had died down, it resurfaced this weekend courtesy of HowtoLearnDrawing’s RobNonStop, who as well as producing an infographic debunking the image as a fake, also linked to our interview with Kyle.
@THEBRYANHITCH “You manage to get an amazing amount of detail in your work—how do you do that with just your finger?” http://t.co/KCnyFDBqXw
