“We all think that we are a bit immortal at times… you can find out very quickly just how human you are after you get a cancer diagnosis at 33 years old.” Joe Martino on the emotional journey behind his comic book The Mighty Titan
You say that you would get lost on ComiXology, do you think that is because the sheer number of new digital titles being released ever week now? How does your relationship with Cloud9 work?
JM: They have so much going on there. Most of the people that will buy The Mighty Titan digitally will be looking for it. I don’t think they would stumble upon it on ComiXology. As for Cloud9 I am just starting to work with them but so far they are really great.
How did you get in touch with artists Luca Cichitti and Jeff Austin, and what do you think they bring to the title? You’ve drawn some of the cover artwork, were you not tempted to draw it yourself?
JM: I had 2 pencilers that didn’t work out. I was speaking with Tyler James from ComixTribe and he turned me on to Luca’s work. I thought it was a great fit for what I wanted to do and I knew I could work with him. I’ve known and worked with Jeff for years. We are good friends and I wouldn’t work with anyone else if I had the chance. We have a great working and personal relationship. I’d draw it myself if I had the time. I am working on a Titan\Shadowflame crossover (with a Bryan Hitch cover – see right) and that is really fun. But I really don’t have time to draw a regular book.
The first issue has a Jerry Ordway cover, how did he get involve and how did that feel to have such a legend working on your first issue? Are there any other artists you’ve got working on future issues and who is on your wishlist for collaborations?
JM: I emailed Jerry Ordway and explained to him what I wanted to do and what I needed. I have all 5 issues finished. Jamal Igle, Steve Lightle, Bob Mcleod and John Byrne. In that order. I have a few more on my list. Zeck, Keown, Perez and more!.
Do you ever worry about your book being stigmatised or unfairly judged because of it’s subject matter or do you think there is enough in there to appeal to a wide variety of readers?
JM: The Mighty Titan is a superhero comic. It has underlying themes but there are plenty of things to distract from that. Vile villains, Mechas, Cyclops’ and a ton of other stuff going on. I hope people will give it a chance either way.
What plans do you have for The Mighty Titan beyond this first run? Will it be released in print or in a collected form as well as being available via your website? Any plans for it to be released in other formats?
JM: I would love to do a hardcover or Omnibus after the 5 issues are complete. We’ll see how well it is recieved and if there is a need or want for such a product.
Finally do you have a message for anyone out there who might be going through a similar experience to yourself or who may have a family member affected by cancer?
JM: I’ve said this before but it bears repeating…
If you have cancer – embrace your family and friends.
If you have a friend or family member who has cancer – talk to them. But give them the space they need.
If you love someone with cancer – Understand that we know you are going through it too. But we can’t help you. Not right now.
If you are a survivor of cancer – Bravo! Live life like you never have before because only you know what it is like to feel immortal, and then with one sentence, one word… never feel that way again.
