“We want the big publishers to see that the indie companies can produce great stories and quality comics.” Second Sight Studios’ Bradley Golden on why comics fans should give his books a first look
Second Sight Studios founder Bradley Golden is on a mission to prove to the world of comics that indie publishers can be just as successful in the new digital world as the Big Two. With two great new titles, Hunt and Orision already launched on ComiXology, and a load more to come, Bradley and his team of pro-digital creators are making a mark for themselves with their own brand of monochrome mayhem and black & white bloodshed. We caught up with Bradley to find out why digital comics fans should give Second Sight a first look.
Tell us a bit about the background of Second Sight Studios? Who is involved and what are your backgrounds in comics?
BG: Second Sight Studios started out with just two writers, me and Brian Stewart. We had planned on doing strictly superhero comics but that didn’t pan out. Six months later I meet Ugur Sertcelik and I really liked his style. At the time I had a monster horror book I was working and from that point on Orision was born. After it was released on Comixology and well received I got an idea of having an independent company that specializes in black and white horror comics. So, for the next four months I released Orision #2-3 with new artist Matt Santorelli.
What’s the story behind the name ‘Second Sight’ is there a deep significance to the title of your Studio?
BG: Yes, I chose the name Second Sight Studios because I wanted the big publishers to give the little guys like us a second look. We want the big publishers to see that the small independent companies are able to produce great stories and engrossing, quality comics. I also chose the name due to the fact that I’m trying to give the readers a second look at what a we’ll done black and white comic can accomplish. Trying to bring it back if you will. All our titles are black and white at this time.
You’ve released two books on ComiXology, Hunt and Orision, can you give us an idea of what these books are about and what are the unique things about them which will make people want to pick these titles up?
BG: Yes, Orision on is our monster horror title, which is in the vein of John Carpenter’s The Thing with a little of the movie The Grey thrown in. It’s mainly about a exploration crew who went to a foreign mountain looking for a fountain of youth, equivalent. But their greed got the best of them, they dug too deep into the mountain releasing a legendary creature that wipes them out. With only a distress call to go on. The head of the medical company sends in a rescue crew unknowing the horror that awaits them.
Hunt is a vampire romp in the vein of the TV show Angel. It’s about an archangel and vampire hybrid who is hunting down legendary creatures of lore while trying to find out the truth about his past.
Tell us a bit about your experience with ComiXology, and how important is digital distribution for a small publisher like yourself?
BG: My experience with ComiXology has been pretty easy and laid back. There have been the occasional fix this small thing here in there, but nothing significant. Approval times are usually within the 2-3 weeks time frame.
I feel digital distribution is going to be a big part of not only the indie publishers revenue, but the big publishers revenue too within the next 2 years. Don’t get me wrong print will always be there and a mainstay in this industry, but as more and more phones, tablets, iPads and cheaper laptops being released and sold more readers will have the content they need right at their fingertips and at cheaper value.
What’s next from the Second Sight team? Are Hunt and Orision ongoing series or one-shots and will we be seeing more titles and creators jointing your group anytime soon?
What’s next up for the company is getting ready for the release of Leave On The Light, ODM, Polar Bear Zombie, Alien Noir, Mississippi Zombie, Victoria Black and my autobiographical Comic Broken Home through Comixology and ComicsFix.
Hunt and Orision are tended to be ongoing series coming out bimonthly. There have been a few creators to join our company and we are preparing a sister label Second Sight Studios/Rennertainment!! That will focus on the comics for teens, children and women.
You can download Hunt #1 for £1.49/$1.99 and Orision #1-3 for £0.69/$0.99 from ComiXology and ComicsFix and for more information visit the Second Sight Studios Facebook page
