“Scrollon stories are not designed just to be viewed, they are designed to be traveled.” Scrollon creator Doug Lefler reveals his innovative new digital comics app for iPad
Do you think other creators will embrace this new idea and any plans to bring onboard any other writers/artists?
DL: There are other creators working on Scrollon stories now. I encourage artists and writers who want to embrace this new visual narrative art form to contact me. I’m eager to see more stories in this format that don’t have my name on them.
What do you think Scrollon offers readers that ComiXology‘s Guided View or a Motion Comics’ transition based approach cannot offer? And what makes a great digital comic for you? Any you would recommend?
DL: First let me say, I love ComiXology and am doing my part to keep that company profitable. They have put a vast library of content at our disposal and I, for one, am extremely grateful. As far as repurposing goes they have done an excellent job. I’m also a fan of the Ave! Comics App, primarily because it gives me access to French BDs. But repurposing something to a new media is never as desirable as designing something for that media. The experience of reading on a portable electronic device is inherently different from reading a physical book. With Scrollon I wanted to create something that was uniquely suited to that experience.
You’ve come from a film background, did you bring any tips and tricks from that world into this and were you ever tempted to make the page fully move and animate?
DL: Yes to both questions. Another important influence for Scrollon was studying old background drawings from Pinnochio (when I was in the story department at Disney). Especially helpful were the long panning shots where the perspective curves and shifts to simulate the camera rising, falling or tilting.
What can we expect from you next and what are your hopes and ideals for the Scrollon app and the various titles? How regularly will we see new titles or episodes for example?
DL: The current plan is to release new titles the first Monday of every Month. I would like to increase this to once a week as more artists and writers come on board.
Finally, which current comic or movie would you like to give the Scrollon treatment to?! (Or which old comic would you like to see re-imagined?!)
DL: All of them.
Scrollon is available from the iTunes Store and you can download it here.
