Preview: Portsmouth International Comic Convention 2019
This weekend we’ll be heading to the south coast, and the Portsmouth Independent Comic Convention. Situated in the city’s historic Guildhall it claims to be the largest convention on the south coast, and will feature the usual mix of guest panels, signings, showcases, competitions, cosplay, special events and merchandise.
While the show’s main focus will celebrate the 80th anniversary of the first appearance of Superman, the art of HBO’s Game of Thrones, and a behind the scenes on Doctor Who, it will also pay tribute to the art of comics in general with some fantastic comic guests.
Guests for the weekend include Marvel legends Roy Thomas and Steve Englehart, French artists like Bengal and Claire Wendling, British artists Laurence Campbell, Liam Sharp, Sean Philips, Jamie Delano and Mark Buckingham, As well as international talent like Rafael Albuquerque, Tommy Lee Edwards and Gene Ha.
The world of indie and small press will also be represented with the irrepressible Etherington Brothers joining the fray with their Kickstarter breaking How To Think When You Draw books. Alongside them will be Dead Canary Comics’ Matt Fitch and Chris ‘CS Baker who will be holding a panel to discuss their new webcomic Our Land, and writing about America. Also in attendance will be Punks Not Dead creators David Barnett and artist Martin Simmonds (Death Sentence Liberty), Friendo’s Alex Paknadel, These Savage Shores writer Ram V as well as Reel Love creator Owen Michael Johnson and many more!
Portsmouth Comic Con will also see a host of new small press books being launched, including the debut of Steve Tanner’s new Warrior-inspired anthology Brawler, as well as the first convention appearance of Merrick The Sensational Elephantman #8. PICC will also see journalist Joel Meadows releasing his book Masters of Comics.
