As UK comics institution The Beano celebrates it’s 80th birthday, and 2000 AD it’s 40th last year, the subject of ‘the state of British comics’ has become a real hot button issue online. As people lament the lack of newsstand presence for British comics and claim the the UK comics scene is in decline, we wholeheartedly disagree (at least with the latter). So we’ve decided to run down 10 of our favourite British comics which we think prove that the UK comics scene has never been more vibrant and diverse – you just have to know where to look for them!

We’ve had those moment where we want to try a new career direction and it hasn’t worked out, but in It’s Cold In The River At Night, the new book from Alex Potts and Avery Hill, our hero Carl takes on the challenge of building coffins for a surly local craftsmen, and gets much more than he bargained for. With it’s mix of melancholic isolation and futility in the face of attempted self discovery, we caught up with Alex to find out more about what drives Carl and co to do what they do.

Small press sensation Rozi Hathaway is making quite the name for herself on the indie scene with her beautiful, through-provoking, poetic style. With a  dreamy mix of painted artwork and minimalist story-telling, her latest book Cosmos And Other Stories was launched at Leamington Comic Con to critical acclaim, so we caught up with Rozi to find out more about what inspires her highly personal style of comic.

A trip to a comic convention always brings a whole treasure trove of new comics. Some by writers and artists already established on the circuit while others by creators who are a little more new to the game. Today we focus on one of the later with Untold, an unnerving horror title by Daniel Farrand, Johannes Vick and the rest of their creative team, Untold Productions. Will this comic be a treat or will it scare the readers away?

TransferIn the last year, creator Matt Garvey has exploded on to the UK small press scene to produce some very eclectic and enjoyable comics, in particular his breakout title Chunks. Now he moves away from prior genres to create sci-fi thriller Transfer with artist Eder Messiah and we’ve been given a fantastic early look. But will this be another Chunks-like success, or will Transfer end up being somewhat null and void?

If you like your reads at the bczf2016artier end of the comics spectrum – and live outside the M25 and so don’t get to go to events like LCAF – then the Bristol Comics and Zine Fair is a perfect day out for you. Now in it’s sixth year the event is held in the old fire station in the city centre, and features a fantastic range of genuine small press talents, from ‘names’ like Avery Hill and Mike Medaglia, to up and coming artists and zine makers from all over the country, not just the West Country.

Small Press BrexitWe don’t normally get involved in politics, but with recent events in the UK reaching far beyond the polling booths and the palace of Westminster, we sent our intrepid reporter Olly MacNamee to look at the impact that a Vote to Leave The EU, has had on the UK Comic Community. He talks to comic creators and comic con organisers to find out the true impact that Brexit is having on the world of small press comics.
