The Beast of Wolfe's Bay creator Erik EvensenBack in the 1990s we were all believers in the things that went bump in the night thanks to shows like the X-Files, but these days everyone is much more sceptical. Well writer/artist Erik Evensen is set to change all that with his brilliant new graphic novel The Beast of Wolfe’s Bay released this week via ComiXology. This self-published supernatural story sees struggling palaeoanthropologist Brian and folklorist Winifred investigate mysterious disappearances in the small town of Wolfe’s Bay that may or may not be connected to a mysterious gorilla like figure seen at the scene of the crime. Winifired’s sheriff father is convinced it’s got a supernatural subtext, but who or what is really behind it all? Packed full of twists, turns and terror, but with a brilliant light tone that’s reminiscent of Scooby Doo, The Beast of Wolf’es Bay is a fantastic read, and so, like Mulder and Scully, we set out to find more about this small town’s secrets and contacted Erik hoping to find out the truth behind this mysterious beast.

Some say he is a force of nature. Others say is a reject of a hormone injected time gone by. The facts are, he’s the most unstoppable cop on the force. This high octane splatterfest will follow BPC and his partner as they battle the notorious Fuster Cluck gang. King Bone Press will bring you a 32 1/3 page one shot comic featuring a tale of the cock with a glock and they are looking for your help to fund it via Kickstarter launched today.

King_Bone_Logo_Distress_Layers_copyIn last week’s Sunday Digest we told you about a brilliant self-published indie anthology from King Bone Press called Bandthology. A collection of awesome music themed comics from a variety of talented writers and artists across the US, all with a musical/band related theme. We were keen to find out more about the story behind it, as well as the other King Bone titles (and not to mention that slightly risque name), so we contacted ‘King Bone’ himself Bobgar Ornelas as well as writer Jon Westhoff to find out the back story of this unique indie self publisher.

Joe MartinoJoe Martino’s The Mighty Titan is a Kickstarter funded superhero spectacular that uses the emotive issue of cancer to make his tales of heroes and villains resonate with a real emotional core.  Fresh from the success of issue 1 which we reviewed back in May, issue 2 was successfully funded in just 30 hours and is set to hit the newsstands in August. Keen to find out the secret to crowd sourced comics we got in touch with Joe to ask him all about it and also to give us his own take on the fascinating and very personal journey that brought us The Mighty Titan

silver1_coverStephan Franck wanted to make the move from animation to digital comics, but rather wait for the big companies to come knocking he decided to start his own – Dark Planet Comics – and release his own titles the way he intended them to be. Releasing their first issue, the magnificently monochrome Silver back in March, Stephan and Dark Planet are looking to take on the big boys at their own game with this 1930s infused horror/pulp adventure – with a familliar bad guy lurking at the centre. To find out more about the world of Dark Planet Comics we got in touch with Stephan hoping to find out some secrets from the world of Silver.

MightyTitan1This Kickstarter funded comic from writer Joe Martino takes the emotive subject of cancer and uses it as one of the central premises for a superhero adventure. This first issue of a 5 issue mini series was successfully funded last year and is now available via Martinos’ website, and may sound like a glib or insensitive way to treat such a serious subject, but Martino uses his own experiences as a way to give his book a smart and emotive central core, without  wallowing in bleak self-analysis. This makes for a title that should appeal to those affected by cancer and those just in need of an entertaining read and as such is well worth checking out.

OUTRE_issue1_1Free Comic Book Day was a fantastic way to help bring people into the world of comics and get them into comic book stores. But for those operating in the digital space it was also a great opportunity to pick up new readers at a time when comics have never been cooler. One of the small publishers looking to make to the most of FCBD are Norwegian publishers Outré Press. The first issue of their anthology of themed comic stories was released this Saturday via their website as a PDF, CBR or CBZ file. Featuring a fantastic mix of diverse and enthralling art and stories this first issue, based around the theme of ‘responsibility’, features work from writers and artists from all over the world – as well as featuring an interview with Saga artist Fiona Staples.  To find out more about the launch of this exciting new project we contacted editor Glenn Møane to get the bottom of just what Outré Press was all about – including that enigmatic name!
