Captain Midnight 1As you’ll know from this weekend’s Sunday Digest, Dark Horse Comics’ Captain Midnight is a smartly written Golden Age throwback superhero adventure from writer Josh Williamson. But what makes him different other ‘man out of time’ stories and a certain flag wielding Avenger? To get the lowdown we contacted Josh to find out the secrets behind Dark Horse‘s doer of daring deeds.

Masks_and_Mobsters_07-1It’s not often you get genuinely new ideas in the world of comics, but this month has seen two startingly original books hit the shelves. First there was Jamie McKelvie’s brilliant Young Avengers #4 which included an awesome isometically designed spread that blended the worlds of design and comic art to create something truly unique. While in Masks and Mobsters #7 from MonkeyBrain Comics, Josh Williamson and Mike Henderson build their story around an original structure that is so blissfully simple, yet ingeniously clever, that as soon as you reach the pay off at the end you just want to turn back to page 1 and read it all over again to make sure you have fully appreciated what you have just been a part of.

The Masks and Mobsters team of Josh Williamson and Mike Henderson have taken their world of 1940s pulp noir and infused it with a generous dose of ‘the best Christmas story ever told‘ – Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol – for this brilliant festive offering. As two hitmen try to hunt down a certain, Ebeneezer Scrooge, they are warned off their hit by some malevolent spirits who have other plans for Mr Scrooge.

One of our favourite titles from the recent MonkeyBrain launch was the brilliant crime noir superhero adventure Masks and Mobsters from Josh Williamson and Mike Henderson. With it’s stunning black and white artwork and it’s enthralling mix of golden age superheroes, mad scientists and 30s style gangsters it stood out as something really intresting and exciting – plus it had a fantastic twist to end the final issue. Reminding us of everything from Ed Brubaker’s Incognito to Will Eisner’s legendary Spirit we wanted to find out more about where the inspiration came from so we got in touch with both Josh and Mike to find out just what it’s like bringing Masks and Mobsters to MonkeyBrain .
