Unbound is a new UK based trade publishing house that operates on a Kickstarter-like crowdfunding model which I’m beginning to hear more and more about from a few creators such as Ram V, author of last year’s Indian based crime-noir graphic Novel Black Mumba. He has chosen this site to raise the funds for Grafity’s Wall, a coming-of-age GN set against the South Asian continent’s own city that never sleeps, Mumbai.
Black Mumba is the debut graphic novel from writer Ram Venkatesan, an anthology of stories set in the sordid street level world of Mumbai, India. Linked by a central character, Detective Dev, who’s job it is to investigate some of the more horrific homicides and crimes this city has to offer. This book takes all the familiarity of the crime-noir genre and mixes it in with exotic, but not necessarily enticing, locations, social commentary and a touch of the supernatural too.
We love a gritty crime noir and this week’s Kickstarter of the Week gives the genre a unique twist by setting the tale in the murky streets of Mumbai instead of LA or London. Featuring four short stories, it contains all the classic elements of noir, from a brooding city to a weary inspector at the centre of everything as well as a supernatural undertone which writer Ram Venkatasen uses to give the world of Black Mumba a sinister undercurrent, just like the sinister snake which it is named after. The slick black and white art is produced by 4 Indian artists and mixes watercolour washes and cross hatched inking to give the book a fantastic vintage feel as well as maximise the darkness of some Black Mumba’s more terrifying tales.
